Mechanical Permits

What is considered mechanical work?

A mechanical permit is required before any new equipment is installed or alterations are made to an existing mechanical system. Examples include a furnace, air conditioner, fireplace, gas piping, exhaust fan, range vent, garage heater or new venting of a gas appliance.

In the instance of an emergency equipment replacement, the work can be performed as long as the permit is applied for the next business day.

Who can apply for a mechanical permit and perform the work?

For commercial properties, contractors bonded by the State of Minnesota are the only authorized party able to apply for permits and perform mechanical work.

For residential properties, contractors bonded by the State of Minnesota are the only authorized party able to apply for permits and perform mechanical work on new construction. If the project is an alteration, remodel, repair or addition - the homeowner can apply for the permit and perform the work only if they own and occupy the home as their primary residence. This means the property must be homesteaded and cannot be rented/leased and occupied by others.
