Parks and Recreation Wellness Wheel

A Community Focus on Wellness

The New Year often brings a sense of renewal - a chance to pause and reflect on what matters most in the year ahead. We look forward to joyful moments like birthdays, holidays, vacations, and personal goals, while also navigating life’s challenges such as caring for aging loved ones, financial planning, changing habits, and strengthening relationships.

One helpful way to approach both the celebrations and the challenges of life is through a wellness mindset. Wellness is not a single destination, but an ongoing journey throughout life that encourages balance across the following multiple and interconnected areas:

  • Emotional – Understanding, accepting, and positively managing our feelings
  • Environmental – Creating health, safe, and supportive surroundings while respecting nature
  • Financial – Managing resources wisely and working toward financial security
  • Intellectual – Staying curious and engaged through learning and creativity
  • Occupational – Finding satisfaction and enrichment through work, school, hobbies, or volunteering
  • Physical – Supporting health through functional exercise, effective nutrition, and optimal sleep
  • Social – Building and maintaining strong relationships and community connections
  • Spiritual – Discovering meaning, purpose, and values that guide our lives

Wellness Wheel

In today’s fast-paced and digital world, many of us are tempted to seek instant gratification or believe that “more” or “extreme” is better. Whether it’s same-day delivery or the pursuit of wealth, focusing too heavily on one area of life often leads to imbalance. True, lasting well-being comes from awareness and intentional effort across all dimensions of wellness—not perfection, but balance.

The Chaska Parks and Recreation Department plays an important role in supporting all areas of wellness both for individuals and for our community as a whole. Our vision is simple yet inspirational: to create lifelong memories and a healthier community for ALL to enjoy! We take pride in serving all residents and are passionate about making a positive difference in the overall health and well-being of Chaska.

Environmental wellness is an area where Parks and Recreation has a significant impact. Chaska is fortunate to have outstanding amenities, including the Community Center, Curling & Event Center, the Town Course and Loop golf courses, more than 30 parks, and over 90 miles of trails with a variety of natural areas. Beyond managing these spaces, city staff also design programs and events that encourage residents to connect with the outdoors, stay active, and engage with one another.

None of us has everything figured out, and that’s okay. By embracing a wellness mindset, we can support one another in creating healthier, happier, and more fulfilling lives. Parks and Recreation staff—and city staff across Chaska—are here to help build a community where people feel safe, have access to a healthy lifestyle, and are proud to call home.

In future issues of Chaska Today, we’ll take a closer look at each dimension of wellness and share resources to help you explore them further. If you have ideas or suggestions related to wellness and how we can better serve the community, we’d love to hear from you.  Send us an email.

Be well,
Marshall Grange
