Election Judges

Overview

Election judges play an important role in administering elections. By becoming an election judge, you get to learn more about the election process and provide a great service to the community.

Qualifications

To serve as an election judge you must meet the following state and city qualifications:

Must be at least 18 years of age or older (student trainee judges may be 16-17 years of age)
Eligible to vote in Minnesota
Able to read, write and speak English
You cannot be a spouse, parent, child, or sibling of any election judge serving in the same precinct at the same time
You cannot be a candidate or the spouse, parent, child or sibling of a candidate on the ballot in that precinct

Duties

Attend 2 hours of required training
Protect the rights of voters
Administer election procedures according to training
Maintain neutrality and impartiality in the polling place
Open and/or close the polls
Responsible for all election materials
Ensure that only qualified voters are permitted to vote, are at the correct polling site, and only votes once
Register new voters on election day
Distribute ballots
Tally and certifying the election results
Set up/take down election equipment

Training

Carver County provides training for all election judges prior to the Primary Election.
Training is mandatory and lasts approximately 2 hours.
Judges are paid for training and working at the polling place.
Shift options:
- Full Day (6 a.m. to approximately 10 p.m.)
- Morning Shift (6 a.m. to 2 p.m.)
- Evening Shift (1:30 p.m. to approximately 10 p.m.)
